RIP Olumide Bakare:
Veteran Nollywood actor, Olumide Bakare
reportedly died earlier on Saturday, April 22, 2017, after battling a heart and
lungs sickness which kept him bedridden at the University College Hospital
(UCH), Ibadan
News of his death was confirmed by his P.A
as well as actors, Saheed Balogun and Dele Odule.
Until his death, it was gathered that the late
actor, who last year made a cry for help to cater for his worsening health,
needed about N30,000 daily for diagnosis after having spent over a
million naira on medical expenses to treat his heart and lung ailment.
Bakare, aged 65, reportedly died on his way to
the hospital on the 23rd of April, 2017.
Olumide Bakare, during his lifetime, was famous
for portraying a flamboyant man, a sugar daddy, loving husband, a strict
father, a ritualist and several other characters in most of the Nollywood
movies he appeared in.
Quite noticeable is his deep-bass-voice which
commands attention every time he’s portraying an angry character on screen.
Bakare’s acting career kicked off when he joined
the Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners (ANTP) in the year
1998 after officially retiring from the Nigerian Television Authority
(NTA).
Popularly called Chief Koko, a nickname he got
after appearing in the rested TV Series – Koko Close, He acted in Aderounke,
a Yoruba movie written and produced by Muyiwa Ademola. He was paid
N3,500 for the job.
Asides being a crossover actor, featuring
alongside Genevieve Nnaji in Tony Abulu’s Doctor Bello,
the late Bakare also featured in over 100 Yoruba home videos including Ile
Olorogun, Ise Onise, Aye Olorogun, and Iboji.He
also appeared in several TV series like Super Story, This Life
and Papa Ajasco.
Bakare made his last major acting appearance as
Otunba Bamisaye in Tunde Kelani’s Maami – A movie based on
the life of a poor single parent trying to make a better life for her son.
